We then head out on Route 62 for two days of sublime landscape and wines near Robertson. Finally we migrate towards Knysna on the famous Garden Route, capping an unforgettable seven days! Expect the best hospitality, breathtaking views, award-winning wines, and local cuisine - all so much better with hiking, biking and kayaking.
The French corner of the Cape, Franschhoek, lies in one of the most beautiful wine valleys in the world, just 45 minutes’ from Cape Town and within half an hour of the Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington and Somerset West wine routes. Today’s highlights include wine tastings at five estates, two cellar tours, a chocolate tasting, and a memorable wine-pairing lunch.
We’ll leisurely cycle through the winelands, explore scenic backroads, take in the views, and indulge in a bit of wine tasting without worrying about drinking and driving. By the way, the tour is equally enjoyable if you don’t drink wine!
Our accommodations for tonight and tomorrow is one of the valley’s jewels, homely but luxurious, nestled in beautiful surroundings.
Located between magnificent mountains, it is a retreat for body, mind and spirit. After a sundowner on your private porch, we gather for an exquisite dinner to round-off the day’s activities.
Just outside of Franschhoek is a collection of superb wineries, producing some of the country’s most prestigious and award-winning wines. This morning, after a hearty breakfast, we cycle from our hotel straight into the vineyards.
Today’s wineries offer a blend of winemaking steeped in traditional French culture and modern techniques. A talented generation of creative winemakers successfully build on the inheritance and traditions of their forbearers.
With names such as Rupert & Rothschild, Noble Hill, Babylonstoren, and Plaisir De Merle, the new and the old conspire to bring you an unforgettable kaleidoscope of wines.
We cycling from estate to estate through a fairytale landscape. Lunch is a gourmet picnic. After lunch guests can enjoy a leisurely afternoon or continue the ‘sip & cycle’ tour. The evening is free and Bike & Saddle Trip Leaders will be at the ready to look after your wishes.
Robertson is located at the heart of Route 62, the longest wine route in the world [which stretches all the way from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. Leaving Franschhoek after a wonderful breakfast, we shuttle to our exclusive boutique guesthouse, 15km outside of Robertson, our home for the next two days.
The visit to Robertson begins with a guided walking tour with the local town historian. We'll hear about the Pink Church (1859), the Edwardian No 12 Piet Retief Street (1904), the Victorian No 59 Van Reeneen Street (1914), the Powder House, and so much more.
The tour ends with a light lunch in town. We then return to our boutique guesthouse where a tour of the cellar awaits - and for the creatives amongst us, the opportunity to blend our own creation wine. With the day coming to an end, we take a stroll into the hills, and enjoy a sundowner with a view of the whole valley.
We make it home in time to freshen up and for a home-cooked, three course dinner with estate wines. Simply the perfect ending to another wonderful day!
The Robertson Wine Route is an officially recognised Wine of Origin region and the Cape’s largest wine producing region.
Today we’ll cycle through fruit orchards and vineyards and will enjoy beautiful views. The most common wines found along this wine route are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Cycling at a leisurely pace, we’ll visit as many estates as we want. We can choose from Excelsior, Graham Beck, Robertson Winery and Van Loveren, Weltevrede, Bon Courage, De Wetshof, Rooiberg, Bon Cap and Kranskop, to name a few.
We return to our manor house for a relaxing afternoon. Dinner is a traditional, Route 62 BBQ with local delicacies.
Today, we drive from Robertson along Route 62 through the towns of Ashton, Montagu and Barrydale and our day will end on the Indian Ocean! The road follows winding and spectacular mountain passes, leading into lush green valleys and framed by magnificent rock faces.
The Cape is known for its abundance of indigenous flora and no fewer than 500 different species of succulents can be seen along Route 62. Keep an eye on dams and wetlands for a chance to spot the Blue Crane, South Africa’s national bird and an endangered species.
Here we join the The Garden Route - a coastal corridor on the southern coast of South Africa. Ancient forests, rivers, wetlands, dunes, lakes, mountain scenery and indigenous fynbos all merge to form a landscape of amazing beauty. Our home for the next two nights will be in a beautiful boutique hotel on the Knysna lagoon.
After a truly spectacular breakfast overlooking the Lagoon at Knysna, we get on our bikes for a ride through indigenous and pine forests, traversing sections of the famed Seven Passes on the lower slopes of the Outeniqua mountains. We descend through breathtaking escarpment and rolling valleys to meet the azure blues of the Indian Ocean and the bird paradise, called Wetlands of Eden.
After a gourmet picnic on the river banks, we kayak down the black waters of the Touws River and will then explore on foot deep into forest. Our destination are lush pools, carved out of solid rock over eons and framed by a roaring mountain waterfall.
Enjoying the forest sounds and thunder of the falls we take a break before retracing our steps for some easy canoeing. We join the twisting curls of the Serpentine River before paddling out to the Lagoon and the rolling surf of Wilderness beach. As the sun sets over the horizon, we toast the perfect day with a glass of bubbly!
Today we’ll explore Knysna Lagoon, arguably The Garden Route’s most beautiful lagoon estuary. We cycle at a leisurely pace through the Waterfront and past the sailing boats and then bike to the famous Knysna Heads along the banks of the Lagoon which is now a protected marine reserve and home to the extraordinary sea horse and over 200 species of fish. We’ll have lunch of fresh local Oysters and a glass of ice cold bubbly at the Cruise Café.
After lunch, we take the ferry to the Featherbed Nature Reserve where we will ride through the reserve and on to Brenton on Sea. The ride back from Brenton follows the crest of the Dunes between the ocean and the lagoon providing spectacular views of both.
This concludes our Garden Route tour and we’ll say good-bye over sundowners.
